As dancers advance through the levels in Irish step dancing, they have the opportunity to achieve championship status. Starting at the Preliminary level, dancers compete in both hard and soft shoe dances. After earning two first place awards and receiving approval from their teacher, they progress to the next level known as Open Championship.
